Everyday cars, German electronics
A Volkswagen shares its electronics with Audi, which means the same battery registration, the same parking brake service mode and the same EPC light. Treat a VW like any other commuter car and those steps get missed.
We don't miss them. And because our prices are published, a VW costs the same to fix here as anything else.
What we see on Volkswagen cars
EPC light and reduced power
EPC is the VW Group's electronic power control warning. If the brake lights are also acting up, the brake light switch is a well-known cause. Otherwise the throttle body or a sensor is the usual suspect.
Coolant leaks on the 2.0 turbo
The EA888 Gen3 2.0-litre turbo in the GTI, Golf R, Tiguan and four-cylinder Atlas can leak coolant between the water pump and the thermostat housing. Plastic fittings on the cooling system get brittle with age.
Electronic parking brake
Many VWs have an electronic parking brake, so the rear pads need it in service mode with a scan tool first. Forcing the pistons back can damage the calipers.
Battery registration
VW batteries are registered to the car after replacement, so the charging system knows a new one is in.
What we do on a VW at your location
- Same prices as any car. A battery on a Jetta is $125 labor, the same as everything else. No German-car markup on our published prices.
- Parking brake service mode. Done with a scan tool before the rear pads come out, and checked after.
- Full-system scans. Every module, so an EPC light, an ABS light and a battery fault are read together.
- Pre-purchase inspections. Buying a used GTI or Tiguan? We look hard at the cooling system and scan every module.
Models
Jetta, GTI, Golf, Golf R, Passat, Arteon, Tiguan, Taos, Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. Any model, at the same published prices.
Questions
Volkswagen owners ask
Do you only work on high-end German cars?
No. A Jetta gets the same care as a Porsche, at the same published prices. And we work on every other make too.
Can you do the rear brakes on my Tiguan or Atlas?
Yes. We put the electronic parking brake into service mode before the pads come out, and reset it after.
My VW says to check the coolant. Can I keep driving?
Check the level only when the engine is cold, and stop if the temperature gauge climbs. Low coolant on these engines usually means a leak, and it's worth finding before it causes overheating.
What does the EPC light mean on my VW?
Electronic Power Control. It usually points to the throttle system, and the car may limit power until it's fixed. More on the EPC light.
