$245 for all four wheels

That's the labor for pads and rotors on all four wheels, on most vehicles. Parts are quoted for your car before we start, and you see the full number first.

If only one axle needs doing, we'll tell you, and it costs less. If we find a sticking caliper or a tired hose, you hear about it before anything changes.

Rear brakes with an electronic parking brake

On many German cars, the parking brake is a motor on each rear caliper. Before the rear pads come out, the system has to be put into service mode. Afterwards it has to be reset.

Pushing the piston back without doing that can damage the caliper. We do it the right way every time, and check the parking brake works before we leave.

Wear sensors and service reminders

Many German cars have brake pad wear sensors, and once a sensor has triggered, it's done. It gets replaced with the pads, or the warning comes straight back.

BMWs also track brake wear in their service system. After new pads that reminder needs resetting, so the dash isn't still asking for brakes next month.

What the noise is telling you

A light squeal on the first few stops of a humid morning is usually surface rust coming off the rotors. It fades after a few stops.

Grinding is different. That's metal on metal, and every drive cuts deeper into the rotors. Call before it gets more expensive.

On German cars

  • Electronic parking brake: service mode before the rear pads come out, reset and tested after.
  • Wear sensors: checked on every job, replaced if they've triggered. The sensor is priced as a part, up front.
  • BMW CBS: the brake service reminder is reset for the new pads. Why the light comes on.

Questions

Brakes, answered

Does $245 include parts?

No. It's the labor for pads and rotors on all four wheels, on most vehicles. Parts are quoted for your car before we start.

Can you do rear brakes on a car with an electronic parking brake?

Yes. We put the parking brake into service mode before the pads come out and reset it afterwards, which is what the car needs.

Why is my brake warning still on after new pads?

Usually the wear sensor wasn't replaced, or the service reminder wasn't reset. Both are quick to put right.

Can you do brakes in an apartment lot?

Yes, as long as there's a level space with room around the car.
