Brake pad warning light on? What it means on a German car
Many German cars have wear sensors built into the brake pads. When the pads get thin, the sensor wears through and the light comes on. It's an early warning, and it's worth acting on before it turns into grinding.

Narrow it down
What it usually means
A yellow brake pad symbol or a "brake pads" message
The wear sensor has made contact or worn through. The pads are near the end, but you usually have some warning time. Plan the job soon rather than eventually.
A BMW brake service message, but no sensor warning
BMW's service system estimates brake wear. We measure what's actually left before recommending anything.
The light is still on after new pads
Wear sensors are single-use once they've triggered. If the old one went back in, or the service reminder wasn't reset, the warning stays on.
Grinding along with the light
The pads are worn through and metal is hitting the rotor. Every drive now adds rotor damage. Book it now.
A red brake warning instead
Red is different. It usually means low brake fluid, a hydraulic problem or the parking brake. Don't drive on it until it's checked.
This is a guide, not a diagnosis. Two cars with the same symptom can have different faults, which is what the scan is for.
Worth knowing
Before you spend money
- Many German cars only have a sensor on one wheel per axle, so we measure all four before quoting.
- A new sensor goes in whenever the old one has triggered. Reusing it almost never works.
- On cars with an electronic parking brake, the rear pads need service mode. Never force the pistons back.
- Tampa's stop-and-go traffic wears pads faster than the mileage suggests.

Questions
Asked about this one
Can I drive with the brake pad light on?
For a short while, as long as the brakes feel normal. It's an early warning. Book it soon, because once you hear grinding, the rotors are being damaged.
Do you replace the wear sensor?
Yes, whenever it has triggered. The sensor is priced as a part, and you'll see it in the quote before we start.
How much is a brake job?
$245 labor for pads and rotors on all four wheels, on most vehicles. Parts are quoted for your car first.
