Warning lights all over the dash? Start with the voltage
When ABS, traction, brake and engine lights all come on together, it looks like the car is falling apart. On a German car the most common cause is simpler: the voltage dropped, and every module noticed.

Narrow it down
What it usually means
They came on after a slow or difficult start
The voltage dipped far enough while cranking that several modules logged faults. A weak or ageing battery is the usual cause, and a load test confirms it.
They came on after a jump start or a battery change
A big voltage dip, or a new battery that was never registered, can leave faults stored across the car. They need clearing once the cause is fixed, and some cars need a quick recalibration too, such as the steering angle sensor.
A battery light is among them while you drive
The car isn't charging. That points to the alternator or its belt, and the battery is running down as you drive. Get somewhere safe and call.
They come and go over bumps
A loose or corroded battery terminal, or a poor ground connection, can cut the voltage for a moment. Cleaning and tightening is a cheap fix once it's found.
One light stays on after the others clear
If the ABS, airbag or parking brake light stays on after the voltage is sorted, that system has a fault of its own. It needs a scan of that module, not just the engine.
This is a guide, not a diagnosis. Two cars with the same symptom can have different faults, which is what the scan is for.
Worth knowing
Before you spend money
- Don't clear the codes yourself first. The stored faults, and when they were set, tell us what happened.
- Note when it started: after a cold night, a jump start, a battery change or a long drive. Each one points somewhere different.
- Start-stop quietly giving up is often an early sign the car isn't happy with its battery.
- A battery around three years old, in Tampa heat, is a prime suspect.

Questions
Asked about this one
Can a weak battery really cause ABS and airbag lights?
Yes. German cars run many control modules, and they log faults when the voltage drops below what they expect. Low voltage is the most common cause of many warning lights at once.
Will the lights go away after a new battery?
Some go out by themselves. Others stay stored until they're cleared, and some cars need a recalibration as well. We clear them once the cause is fixed and check they stay clear.
Is it safe to drive?
If the car drives normally and there's no red warning, usually for a short distance. If the battery light is on while driving, or a red warning appears, stop somewhere safe and call.
